TALLAHASSEE –

As part of a nationwide service initiative, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will deliver a truckload (approximately 35,875 lbs.) of shelf-stable food to Second Harvest of the Big Bend on May 21 to commemorate the America250 national celebration.

The delivery is part of a nationwide effort to send 250 truckloads of food to 250 food banks across all 50 states to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America250 is a nonpartisan congressional commission inviting Americans to mark this milestone through remembrance, reflection, and service.

Rosie Rios, chair of America250 and former U.S. Treasurer, shared at a recent press conference announcing the food and service initiative with the Church, “This is truly a historic moment for all of us … a moment of unity, not just independence,” noting the important role that faith communities play in serving those in need.

Local leaders of the Church in Tallahassee look forward to the delivery reflecting a shared desire to care for neighbors in practical, nonpartisan ways.

“We are deeply grateful to join with Second Harvest of the Big Bend in serving our neighbors and fellow community members,” said President Benjamin J. Smith, regional leader of the Church. “As we celebrate this important milestone in our country’s history, we are blessed with the opportunity to follow the Savior’s example of selfless service and extend His love to families and individuals in need.”

Second Harvest of the Big Bend serves individuals and families in 16 counties throughout North Florida, providing access to food assistance and essential household supplies through a network of partner agencies. Leaders of the organization expressed gratitude for the timing of the donation.

“We pride ourselves on being a reliable resource for our neighbors, and this donation is key to maintaining that consistency,” said Jacob Reiter, interim chief executive officer of Second Harvest of the Big Bend. “This support ensures our mobile pantries stay on the road and our partner agencies remain stocked, helping us uphold our commitment to a hunger-free Big Bend.”

Each America250 truckload includes a variety of shelf-stable foods such as canned fruits, vegetables, pasta, flour, pancake mix, and dried milk. Most of the commodities are produced by the Church and funded by voluntary donations from its members.

The community is invited to find additional ways to serve by visiting JustServe.org, a free community service platform that connects volunteers with local nonprofit organizations.
